Eric Ching Trio

November 21 @ 7:30 pm – 11:00 pm

Austin-based drummer and composer Eric Ching brings a modern, exploratory voice to jazz while keeping one foot firmly in the tradition. His playing is purposeful, colorful, and highly creative, with original compositions influenced by artists including McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock, and Kenny Garrett. His music has a searching, cinematic quality, often unfolding in unexpected directions rather than settling for the obvious turn. ericchingdrums

Raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, Ching studied with acclaimed drummer Akira Tana before attending NYU for Music Education, where his studies included work with Ron McClure, Sean Statser, and Kenny Washington. Over the years he has performed with an impressive range of jazz and blues artists, including George Colligan, Charlie Porter, Eric Reed, Josh Nelson, Robbie Laws, Reggie Houston, Jennifer Keith, and Ben Rice. He is also a Canopus Drums artist and has received support from the Regional Arts and Culture Council, Oregon Arts Commission, and Jeremy Wilson Foundation. ericchingdrums

With the Eric Ching Trio, the drums are not simply keeping time. They help steer the conversation, shaping a set that can move from sophisticated swing and lyrical interplay into more adventurous territory without losing the groove. It’s thoughtful, expressive jazz built for close listening, good conversation, and a room where the music can breathe.
